He has appeared in Rhythm Magazine with his work touring with Siouxsie and his insight on music through the years.

MAD offers private, one on one drum tuition to players of all levels designed to develop students into professional musicians. It's our job to make you a better player and a better musician. We don't just teach you to play the drums, we teach you to play WELL. Whether you're looking to progress into the music industry or simply to get better at your hobby we give you the skills you need.

Unlike most traditional instrumental lessons we don't follow a course or curriculum. Every lesson and every exercise is crafted to suit the student's individual needs. Our methods are very unique in their ways and have delivered great results all round time and time again. Advancements in cognitive science have also improved our understanding of the way we learn to play the drums. We take this into account with every student and design exercises to aid the development of muscle memory, giving you the tools you need to express yourself at the drumset. And with over 30 years combined teaching experience you can rest assured we know our onions! In fact we're so confident about our methods that we can positively guarantee to get anybody, regardless of ability, playing the drums.

We also aim to make your lesson experience as pleasant and as enjoyable as possible. With this in mind, the teaching room has been equipped with top of the range equipment for the student, a sofa for any attendees and free drinks & confectionery. Students arriving early or awaiting a lift from others are also welcome to make use of our waiting room, complete with comfy sofas, TV, Playstation 2 and DVDs. Unfortunately due to licensing issues we don't offer terrestrial television.

The Studio is situated in Chiswick in Power Road, 2 min walk from Gunnersbury Station (District line).

Music & Experience:

Born in Sardinia (Italy) in 1979, I started playing drums at the age of 12.  I studied at the Birdland Music School with great musicians such as Fabrizio Sferra, Massimo Moriconi and Danilo Rea. In 1999, I went to the University of Music in Rome and graduated in 2001. During the 2003 Umbria Jazz Berklee summer course, I had the opportunity to learn from well-known Berklee College teachers and attended master classes of wonderful artists including Bobby McFerrin and Elvin Jones. The same year, I won a scholarship to enter the Berklee College of Music. Since 1995, I have been collaborating with many musicians in various pop, rock, funk and jazz projects in Sardinia and Italy. I played for the "Orchestra Jazz della Sardegna" in 1998 and played with Umberto Smaila in Egypt in 2004. John Wallace has over 15 years playing experience and is a very active drummer playing with Liverpool based bands performing original material. In recent years these bands have achieved radio plays nationally and locally, including live sessions for BBC Radio Merseyside and achieving Gideon Coe’s "Whammo of the Week" on BBC 6 Music. In summer 2008 one of John’s bands performed to over 8,000 as main support for Crowded House at Liverpool Arena as part of the Summer Pops 2008 Festival. John has also toured the UK and Europe several times.

Some of John's students have taken up the option to sit graded examinations with Trinity Guildhall and Rockschool and to date 100% of those students have passed, the majority passing with distinction.

Current projects include Voo and Arms At Last. More recently John performed live with electro-pop band Hallo... I Love You! when they performed as support group for Little Boots at Liverpool's Sound City 2009 event.

Throughout his career Neil has toured and recorded with artists such as Del Shannon, Archie Bell and the Drells, Percy Sledge, The Chi-Lites, Peter Cox (Go West), Mark Shaw (Then Jericho) Steve Norman (Spandau Ballet) and has been a session musician on many television and radio broadcasts. PERSONAL PROFILE:

I started playing drums at the age of 17 whilst at Sixth Form College (where I played my first gig) and within a few months of buying my first drum set a 1960s Premier Olympic, had joined my first hardcore punk band.

 

I joined my second and third bands in 1991 and 1992 and in 1992 had my first experience of touring, when I played shows in the UK and Europe. Since 1992 I have toured with a number of bands (see above) extensively in the UK and Europe and still tour on an annual basis with my current band CISSY. In 2001 I also toured with New York band The Lapse, across the East Coast of the United States.

 

Having studied Film and Television Production at University in Middlesbrough I moved to Leeds in 1998, where I attended Leeds College of Music, studying Music Theory (Grade 5 to Grade 8), Composition, History and Principal and Secondary Instrument studies. Although I did receive drum lessons whilst at LCM I have always remained a self-taught drummer and studied sight-reading and composition privately and without instruction.

 

I began teaching privately in 1999, from my home in the Hyde Park area of Leeds, where I still live. Hyde Park (or LS6) is well-known in Leeds and all over the UK and Europe for its DIY / Underground music culture; it's wealth of good musicians and bands and its strong sense of community. I continue to teach privately at my home residence, where I have a kit set up in my basement.

 

I secured my first job teaching drum classes in 2007 when I took up the post of Teacher of Drum Kit at North Leeds Music Centre in Leeds. There I teach classes of up to 8 students of all ages and backgrounds. More recently I took up the post of Drum Teacher at Priesthorpe School in Pudsey (between Leeds and Bradford), where I teach Year 7 - Year 11 pupils.

 

My teaching style is informal but involved, with the emphasis on individuality, expression, melody, style and freedom. I encourage my students to approach the drum set as a melodic rhythmic instrument, to discover both their creative and expressive ranges and to listen to as many different kinds of music as possible. I believe that the key to becoming a good musical drummer and good musician is to embrace as much style and content as possible, from traditional approaches to more contemporary ideas. I encourage my students to be musical and to develop a keen ear for what is appropriate, relevant and contextual. I also encourage my students to be free-thinkers, to develop their own ideas and to play the way they want to play, not necessarily the way tradition dictates.

I’ve been teaching in Liverpool since 1991, I have a great studio in the building behind ADC Drums. My studio has 2 kits so the pupil never has to leave their kit during a lesson. My studio also has a click track plenty of books & play a long music.

All beginners are given written examples of exercises to help them practice.

I have been supported by Paiste Cymbals since 1998 www.paiste.com and both kits are set up with Paiste Cymbals.

I purchased my 1^st drum kit just before my 20^th Birthday after spending 4 years air drumming. Although I started late I practiced a lot and took to the theoretical side of learning quite well. I developed my drumming through many lessons and have enjoyed attending many Drum Clinics in the UK and USA. I have played numerous gigs all over Europe as well as presenting some Workshops and Drum Clinics of my own*.

Since 1991 I have taught in many schools in the Merseyside area and used to be the Head Drum Teacher for Liverpool City Council.

We have several drummers who are always available for deps in Liverpool, Merseyside & North West. (Blues, Jazz, Rock & Pop).

Review of Julian's Workshop - Plymouth England For Immediate Release August 2004

 

It's surprising what you can organise in a week. One innocent phone call set the ball rolling for what was to be a very busy Sunday for myself and Alan Faulkner who runs today's venue; The Drum Centre in Plymouth.

 

The background on this evolution is that Paiste are sponsoring a number of workshops being run by Liverpool based tutor Julian Marsden. (For those of you who've been living under a rock, Julian is the proprietor of Ecymbals, and probably the UK's No1 Paiste expert) Where Julian gets out and about passing on tips and hints picked up at the Rhythm course, and any new tricks he's developed to add to his, already considerable, 'tool box' of skills.

 

The local turnout was quite good, considering only 10 days of advertising. 25 or so eager drummers with a thirst for knowledge; Quite a mixed bunch both in age, early teens to mid fifties, and ability, 1 to 5 years playing. Julian took to the stage, and within 10 minutes had them in the palm of his hand. (His opening solo, aptly entitled 'Ambulance', should be seen to be believed.) There then followed two hours of interactive instruction which showed the vast array of possibilities using just single strokes, double strokes and paradiddles when applied to a drum kit utilising both hands and feet.

 

Not everything was theoretical learning though. Audience participation was very high on the agenda with a number of the younger members invited up to show their skills and develop new ones. A few jokes, some friendly banter, prizes, and, to the horror at the possibilities of eye loss, how to twirl and flip sticks whilst playing. (The sight of 20 or so teenagers throwing drumsticks around with varying degrees of control was, to say the least, a fascinating, yet frightening spectacle.)

 

Needless to say, the two hours flew by and before we knew it, the workshop was all over. It's a testament to Julian's teaching experience and skills as a drummer that everyone, including some local drum teachers, came away with some new ideas and approaches. His easy going and genial manner meant that no-one felt uncomfortable and the majority of what was taught was assimilated.

 

So to conclude, a very enjoyable experience by all, and showing credit to his own personal integrity, Julian didn't mention his own business at any time. He came here to play drums and teach. And did exactly that. And for the future? Alan has already booked the return trip for next year, young drummers in Plymouth have experienced, (For the first time in MANY a year) a drumming event. And the sales of eye-patches, double pedals and drop clutches is set to soar.

From the age of 10 my life has revolved around music and playing the drum

kit. Whilst in school, I had lessons which involved the City & Guilds root

which I found was quite a military approach to playing the drums, and always

thought "there must be more to the drum kit than this". From there I played

in several bands in school. After fighting my way through the perks of

growing up I soon stopped the lessons, but my drumming interest did not stop

there. From leaving school my musical ambitions have been to join as many

bands as possible and play with as many did'nt musicians as I could find. I

believe this is the best way to learn an instrument. From the age of approx

23-27 I had advanced drum lessons through the drumsense network. I found

this a very practical and interesting way of learning the drums and learnt

more about drums than I ever thought I would thanks to David Cox -

Drumsense. I loved this teaching experience so much, I established a need to

show and share what I have experienced. I now teach drums myself, which I

really enjoy, and have a growing number of students. As part of my ongoing

interest in music I also write my on material which includes new drum beats

I come up with, and is aimed at my students.

James has been playing drumset since 1986. Since that time, he has been

lucky enough to play a huge diversity of styles, from acid jazz to pub rock,

soul to grunge, and much more. James has played countless gigs all over the

U.K., and has played drums and percussion on two well-received CD's by

singer-songwriter Nicky Swann. He has also written articles on motivation

and practice for Modern Drummer, the world's most widely read drum magazine.

 

Having received tuition from various great tutors, James is only too aware

of the influence a good tutor can have. Among the drummers he's studied with

are Steve White, Gregg Bissonette & Neal Wilkinson. In 2003 he studied with

Manchester Open Learning to attain the CIPD Certificate in Training Practice

qualification, and as such is a professional trainer. This experience has

proved invaluable in training and tuition, especially with regard to modular

learning and motivation, key aspects in drum tuition.

 

James prefers Sonor & Slingerland acoustic drums, Zildjian cymbals &

Aquarian heads. He is currently a resident tutor at Rock Solid in Totnes,

Devon.
