Hi there! I’m Mark, a twenty-something drum teacher based in Vauxhall, South West London. I’ve been teaching drums for more than 10 years and I have a wealth of experience working in many educational settings – running whole class workshops, working with pupils with special educational needs (SEN), primary Music teaching and conducting ensembles.
I’m hugely passionate about music and like to tailor my lessons to a student’s interests, whether that’s aiming to play along to their favourite pop songs, progressing through the Grades or learning skills to be able to play in a band.
Stylistically my skills and interests are very varied; I’ve toured throughout Europe with a jazz band, performed in brass bands and big bands at the Royal Albert Hall and played in styles from classical to electronica to folk. As much as I love a good pop/rock song, I think being able to play, improvise and sight read in multiple styles is really useful and I like to bring these ideas into my lessons.
Useful things to know:
- I teach the drums (and orchestral percussion and beginner guitar and piano and can teach a mix of these!).
- I have experience teaching from ages 5-18 (and happy to teach older students!)
- I’m familiar with the GCSE syllabuses as well as all UK grade syllabi.
- I have an Enhanced DBS check. (Previously CRB)
- I have a BMus(Hons) in Music from the University of Surrey where I studied drum kit and percussion performance and composition.
- As well as being a drummer for a few projects, I’m also a published songwriter, and I’ve recorded at some of the world’s top recording studios.
At the moment I only do home visits, but am more than happy to discuss using a rehearsal studio. I currently do teaching in North and South London, so wherever you are, I’m sure we can work something out!
Feel free to drop me an email/give me a call.
Rates for visits: £15/30 minutes, £25/hour.
Top practice tip:
“Don’t practise until you get it right. Practise until it can’t go wrong.”
