I have been a lecturer and drum tutor for over 15 years. It is a role that I care for and one that I am passionate about. In this time I have taken part and been witness to some very clear changes. Changes that I believe have helped improve both the delivery of lessons privately, within school and at university and have enabled further musical growth for all students.
From the skills that I have built up through studying, teaching and playing professionally around the world, it has been my goal to bring about information technology (IT) into all areas my work. For example, the large majority of all my teaching, whether it as head lecturer for drum kit at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, my private work (which I have run as a business for over 15 years), or in the classroom, the use of computer technology has assisted greatly. Now all of my pupils/students are able to take away with them both written examples of work done, as well as audio examples (MP3’s), which recapitulate the lesson. These examples can then be stored and replayed from a computer and MP3 playing device.
Like myself, some people may wish to play for the sheer joy of playing this musical instrument and or to participate with others, since live music is becoming more popular. However, bespoke lessons are particularly important, for often it is the only one on one time that a student will have with a tutor. Lesson are taken to help with the following:
* Refine existing skills on the instrument
* Improve techniques, such as the Gladstone, Push / Pull and Moeller movements
* Develop speed and consistency
* Strengthen balance and co-ordination
* Build knowledge of playing styles and genres
* Strengthen confidence giving every student a voice to be heard
I believe that feelings and thoughts can be channeled and vocalized through the instrument, a voice that is often muted through their lack of understanding or engagement with other musicians. Lessons enable the student to refine and polish their musical ideas so that they can be voiced maturely.
