About Matt Brown

Originally trained as a classical cellist, I switched to drums because it offered more space to be creative, and because it is just plain fun. I have now been playing for over 10 years, and I am studying popular music performance at the Royal Northern College of Music with Dave Hassell. My teaching philosophy is all about having a musical approach so that students can play in an enjoyable and rewarding way from the very beginning. I also play guitar and bass and always spend some time in the lesson playing with the student, as the ability to understand and communicate with other musicians (especially bass players) is the most important skill they can learn, and is often overlooked in individual lessons. I have a fully equipped music room with recording facility which I use in lessons - I find listening to a recording of yourself an extremely useful practice and teaching tool, and learning how to play for recordings is a very important skill to learn.
