I have been playing drum kit for 25 years and teaching for nearly 15.
I taught drum kit up to grade 8 standard, music history and world music at South Birmingham College for 10 years and have a Certificate of Education in teaching. I perform regularly on kit, bongo's as well as lead in a traditional West African set up of Djembe, Dun Dun, Shaker and Bell.
Drum Kit
My specialities on the Drum Kit are in Groove based music with an African heritage such as Blues, Gospel, Jazz, Rock, Soul, Funk, Hip Hop as well as Music from around the World such as Jamaican styles, Ska, Rocksteady, Reggae, Roots, Dancehall, Bashment and other World genres like Afro-Beat, Afro-Latin styles as well as more contemporary dance stuff like Jungle and Dubstep.
I will teach to you to play well and encourage you to develop your own tastes and specialities as well as introduce you to styles, techniques and players. We can work with grades or not depending on you but we will work with concepts such as : Holding Sticks, Feel, Tone, Tempo's, Techniques, Time Signatures, Rudiments, Click Track Playing, Notation, Correct Feel, Playing in a Band, Solo's etc.
Hand Drums
For students interested in playing hand drums I usually begin with Djembe and then move onto Bongo's, Conga's and other percussion if required. I will show you tones and patterns ranging from traditional West African stuff through to more contemporary styles and how they can be attempted with West African percussion. We will work with djembe in the context of the traditional set up of Djembe, Dun Dun and Bell. we will work with concepts such as : Tones, 16th note flow, Time signatures, Improvisation, Working and communicating in a group, Unison Breaks, Feel, Notation, Techniques, Performance/Recording skills etc....
I currently have students with disabilities, life threatening conditions and drug dependencies through to advanced players as well as children from 5 through to 16. I have worked with the homeless, women in disadvantaged situations, older people and I'm happy to work 1 to 1 or in groups. At any age or situation Drumming Is Good For Your Physical and Mental Wellbeing !!!
